Lent
Begins on Wednesday, February 6
Kimball Church
encourages your participation in several spiritual disciplines
to help you prepare for Easter.
1. Curl up with
a good book. The year's selection for the Lenten Book Club is
The Call to Conversion by Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners and
Call to Renewal. Originally published over 25 years ago, this
book is a timely reminder of what it really means to follow Jesus.
Starting Tuesday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m. we will hold a weekly
book discussion at the church.
2. Participate in our Lenten Compact. This year, you can join
others in becoming better stewards of God's creation. Each week
during Lent (starting February 6), we will participate in concrete
steps to reduce, reuse, and recycle. The entire compact can be
viewed on our Justice Watch page. Also link to our Compact Resources to make your lifestyle
more eco-friendly.
I
See Dancing Elephants...
On Saturday, February
16, you'll see more than dancing elephants. You'll see lions,
swans, chickens and more come to life through the music of Saint-Saens'
"Carnival of the Animals" performed by the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra and narrated by television star John Lithgow
(Third Rock From the Sun). After the 11:00 a.m. concert, you'll
enjoy lunch at a downtown restaurant. Tickets are $12 for adults
and $8 for children. The fee includes tickets to the concert,
lunch and round trip transportation.
Spice
Up Your Winter
INDIA has always
fired the imagination of Kimball Avenue Church, starting with
the work of Paul and Ella Rostad in Manipur in the 1920's. So
it seems appropriate that we should reconnect to India through
this year's Ethnic Supper on Saturday, February 23. Megan Avery
(and her helpers) will cook up some amazing Indian cuisine for
us to enjoy together. After the meal, we'll enjoy a time of fellowship
and inspiration. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m.
We will also receive an offering to help defray the winter heating
expenses of the church. We are all well aware that the cost of
heat is rising, so your generosity is appreciated.
Punch
a Politician's Number
The presidential
Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, February 5. The church
is the polling place for Precinct 60 in the 26th Ward. Voters
can find their polling place at the Chicago Board of Elections or the Cook County Elections web sites.
Our
February Tithe
Where is the church
at night? Through "The Night Ministry", it is on the
streets of Chicago reaching out to displaced youth, homeless
adults, addicts, and prostitutes providing health services through
its Health Outreach Bus and shelter through its Youth Shelter
Network. In February, 5% of our Sunday offerings will be sent
to support their work. Link here to find out more about The
Night Ministry.
